The Patient's Role in Patient Safety. Keeping patients safe while they receive medical care is essential. Yet current systems designed to ensure patient safety are not enough, because medical error is the third leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States. Clinicians can partner with the patient to enhance patient safety.
