FGF23 effects on the heart-levels, time, source, and context matter. Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) has appeared as a hormone that is massively elevated in patients with chronic kidney disease. Whether FGF23 is a risk factor that associates with cardiac pathologies and cardiovascular mortality, as suggested by a variety of clinical studies, or additionally acts as a causative factor that induces cardiac injury, as more recently indicated by cell culture and animal studies, is under debate and the center of many ongoing experimental studies.
