Epidermal growth factor and kidney disease: a long-lasting story. Epidermal growth factor has been previously associated with kidney disease. In this issue of Kidney International, Betz et al. (2016) link urinary epidermal growth factor abundance with an increased risk of the development of diabetic nephropathy in a novel animal model of diabetic nephropathy and in a large cohort of patients with type 2 diabetes. Although the clinical value of these observations needs to be confirmed in further studies, these observations further strengthen the tight link between epidermal growth factor and kidney disease.
