Don't trick me twice! Chemotherapy-induced nephrotoxicity limits the success of cancer therapy. Landau et al. now describe a mechanism by which a first dose of cisplatin renders the kidney sensitive to necroptosis mediated by a second dose. Unresolved injury and sustained necrosis, therefore, may represent a pathophysiological means of transition from acute kidney injury to chronic kidney disease.
