Practical Use of Lactate Levels in the Intensive Care. Hyperlactatemia is a strong predictor of mortality in diverse populations of critically ill patients. In this article, we will give an overview of how lactate is used in the intensive care unit. We describe the use of lactate as a predictor of outcome, as a marker to initiate therapy and to monitor adequacy of initiated treatments.
