Isotonic vs Hypotonic Intravenous Fluids for Hospitalized Children. CLINICAL QUESTION: Is isotonic fluid associated with a lower incidence of hyponatremia when compared with hypotonic fluid for maintenance intravenous fluid therapy in children? BOTTOM LINE: Compared with hypotonic fluid, isotonic fluid is associated with a lower incidence of hyponatremia, without evidence of an increase in adverse outcomes.
