Using Diet to Treat Diseases of Esophagus: Back to the Basics. The esophagus plays a crucial role in oral nutrition and digestive pathophysiology. In addition, diet is now considered an important primary or augmentative therapy in several esophageal disease states. This review highlights common dietary therapies used in treating diseases of the esophagus as well as the underlying data that support such practices. Specially, diet and its relationship to swallowing dysfunction, motility disorders, malignancies, and inflammatory mucosal diseases such as gastroesophageal reflux disease and eosinophilic esophagitis is explored.
