Better With Ultrasound: Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Insertion. Peripheral intravenous (PIV) catheter insertion is the most commonly performed procedure in hospitals. Multiple patient factors can make PIV insertion challenging, and ultrasound guidance has been demonstrated to improve the rate of success in these difficult patients. This article outlines the suggested techniques for the ultrasound-guided insertion of PIV catheters, midline catheters, and peripherally inserted central catheters. Illustrative figures and narrative videos demonstrating these techniques are included.
