Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate-Induced Gastric Pneumatosis: A Rare Side Effect. Kayexalate has been used in the USA since 1975 for the treatment of hyperkalemia. Prior case reports have shown that sorbitol added to kayexalate has been known to cause rare side effects of colonic necrosis. We present a unique case report of gastric pneumatosis as a complication of kayexalate.
