Don't obtain routine preoperative chest radiographs, ECGs, or laboratory tests in asymptomatic patients undergoing low-risk surgery. Setting: asymptomatic patient with no active cardiopulmonary disease undergoing low-risk / minor surgery Why: Routine preoperative testing in asymptomatic patients for low-risk surgery rarely changes management and generates false positives and downstream testing. Consider instead: test selectively based on history, examination, and the specific procedure Source: American Society of Anesthesiologists (Choosing Wisely, US, 2013).
