Don't obtain CT scans in children with minor head injuries who are low-risk by validated clinical criteria. Setting: child with minor head injury classified as low-risk by a validated decision rule (e.g. PECARN) Why: CT in low-risk minor pediatric head injury rarely finds significant injury and exposes children to ionizing radiation and future cancer risk. Consider instead: observation and validated decision rules rather than routine CT Source: American Academy of Pediatrics (Choosing Wisely, US, 2013).
